About the artwork: This self portrait was taken while I was staying with a friend in a rustic mountain hut in the Swiss Alps for some time. He was working as a cowherd for the summer, I spent the days roaming around the mountains and enjoying the tranquility of life at 1700m of altitude, waking up to cowbells sounding outside.

Mountain weather is always moody, even in summer, so of course, there were a couple of rainy days as well. But personally, I love the misty mood of clouds moving through the mountains. One day, everything was covered in fog as I went out for a little walk across the wildflower-covered meadows. My first attempt at taking a self portrait failed because it started raining heavily just as I set up the camera.

But after the rain passed, I came across this somber, but beautiful scene: A little clearing full of wildflowers, with fog lingering between its trees. The photo reflects the mystical, gloomy mood of my surroundings, even capturing a feeling of loss and loneliness. Yes, sometimes our souls ache, but it is all part of the human experience.

Being able to live and feel intensely is precious, even in our darker moments, and allows us to transform the pain into something beautiful.
