The best books on Feminine Archetypes

In this section, you will find general book recommendations on (feminine) archetypes, Jungian psychology, and femininity.

Books on Feminine Archetypes and Jungian Psychology

#1 Goddesses in Everywoman: Powerful Archetypes in Women’s Lives by Jean Shinoda Bolen

In my opinion, this is one of the best books to dive into the 7 Feminine Archetypes. It provides a great overview of 7 Feminine Archetypes (and their mythological origins) and was very helpful for my research on the general traits of each archetype. For some archetypes, I would have preferred a more modern perspective (alternatives to the roles of wife/housewife) but overall, the book provides great insights and I am very fond of Bolen’s work.

#2 Women Who Run with the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype by Clarissa Pinkola Estés

I have to admit that I (as well as some other women I talked to) found this book rather hard to read. However, if you enjoy accessing archetypal wisdom through legends and stories, this might be a good read for you. It’s considered a classic for a reason. Note that not all 7 Feminine Archetypes are covered by this book, only a few.

#3 The Archetypes and The Collective Unconscious by Carl Jung

The classic that has, so to say, started it all. It’s worth mentioning that while Carl Jung is the ‘founding father’ of archetypal psychology, some of his ideas, especially concerning femininity, are rather outdated today. However, if you want to dive into the origins of archetypes, these are a great place to start.

Books on Femininity

There is not a lot of literature on the feminine archetypes specifically, so it can help to turn to general books on femininity. Unfortunately, a lot of the books on femininity out there reiterate sexist stereotypes and gender roles, so I tried to find a selection of books providing a more modern and universal view.

#1 The Path of Femininity; The 6 Gifts of Your Sovereignty by Eléonore de Posson

A great introduction to feminine energy and why we need it, especially today.

This book explores six essential traits of femininity: intuition, receptivity, nurturing, sensuality, creativity, and connection. It guides readers through practical exercises, personal stories, and spiritual insights to help them cultivate these gifts and embody their authentic feminine essence.

#2 The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan

The book that made the world understand that women can be so much more than housewives.

“The Feminine Mystique” immensely contributed to the second wave of feminism in the USA. It challenged the prevailing notion that a woman’s fulfillment could be found solely in domestic roles. Despite being mostly focused on middle-class white women, Friedan’s work brought about much-needed change. She questioned cultural norms as well as established psychological concepts, such as Sigmund Freud’s theories (which viewed women as inferior and childlike).

Others:

  • Aspects of the Masculine/Aspects of the Feminine by Carl Jung (haven’t read this one yet, so I can’t vouch for it, some ideas/gender roles might feel outdated)

Book recommendations for each Feminine Archetype

Look here for books that specifically address the unique gifts and challenges of each of the 7 Feminine Archetypes.

Books for the Mother Archetype

This feminine archetype helps us to embody unconditional love, nurturing and compassion. People identifying with the Mother Archetype often struggle with codependency, setting healthy boundaries or burnout from giving too much energy to others.

Books to understand, heal and embody the Mother Archetype:

Books for the Maiden Archetype

The Maiden archetype embodies youthful enthusiasm, optimism, and receptiveness for growth. Challenges may arise as she transitions into womanhood, navigating insecurities and the complexities of maturity while holding onto her sense of wonder and embracing personal growth.

Books for the Queen Archetype

We can look up to this feminine archetype for leadership skills, firm commitment and a sense of abundance. Her strengths lie in her ability to inspire and guide others. The “dark” side of the Queen may expose trust issues, an excessive need to control, or jealousy in relationships.

Books for the Huntress Archetype

The Huntress (or Wild Woman) embodies independence, resilience, and unwavering determination. She thrives on her self-sufficiency and possesses a strong connection to her instincts. Challenges for the Huntress include finding equilibrium between self-reliance and trusting others, as well as avoiding isolation or becoming too detached from communal bonds.

Books for the Mystic Archetype

This feminine archetype encompasses deep spirituality, intuition, and a profound connection to the divine. The Mystic’s strengths lie in her ability to tap into higher realms of knowledge and offer profound insights. Challenges may arise in balancing her inner world of introspection and mysticism with the demands of everyday life, ensuring she remains grounded and connected to reality.

Books for the Sage Archetype

The Sage Archetype represents wisdom, knowledge, and truth. She can help us to pursue goals and thrive intellectually. An unbalanced Sage, however, may feel disconnected from emotional experiences and too much in their masculine energy.

Books for the Lover Archetype

The Lover Archetype symbolizes passion, sensuality, and your capacity to forge deep emotional connections. She can express and experience love on profound levels. On the other hand, the Lover often needs to first learn how to manage those intense emotions and how to let go of external validation.
